What could be more delightful than a séance on a summer evening, a sophisticated couple, and a beautiful apparition? But when the ghost turns out to be Charles Condomine’s deceased and willful first wife, Elvira, visible only to him, delight gives way to frenzied hilarity, and geometry is turned upside down as the eternal triangle is played out simultaneously on two planes of being. Vases are mysteriously smashed, tables leap, pictures fly from the walls until poor Charles is stretched to the breaking point in a romantic tug of war.
