ABOUT LISA

Lisa Vetere is an Associate Professor of English at Monmouth University, where she mainly teaches courses in American literature. Her research focuses on the relationship between early nineteenth-century American narratives and ecological crises. She earned her Ph.D. in 2004 from Lehigh University, with one of her dissertation chapters focusing on The Scarlet Letter. Professor Vetere is currently working on an article for the Nathaniel Hawthorne Review called “When Witchcraft Lost Its Gothic: A Case Study of Hawthorne’s Hags,” which will also be presented in March at the Society for the Study of American Gothic at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, Massachusetts.

A recent essay on the interdependence between horticulture and literature in Charles Brockden Brown’s Wieland was included in the collection,  Dark Scenes from Damaged Earth: The Gothic Anthropocene (University of Minnesota Press, 2022), a book just nominated as a finalist for the 2023 ASLE [Association for the Study of Literature and Environment] Book Awards.  Other scholarship has appeared in the collection, Ecogothic in Nineteenth-Century American Literature (Routledge 2017) as well as in journals such as  Clio: A Journal of Literature, History, and the Philosophy of History and JNT:The Journal of Narrative Theory, the latter recognized by Duke University’s American Literary Scholarship as a “noteworthy period study” in Early-19th-Century Literature. She’s currently at work on a monograph that examines the entanglements between human and nonhuman in the ecological history of early Philadelphia.
