ASBURY PARK PRESS: Joe Iconis and friends return to Be More Chill birthplace for Two River series

Two River Theater in Red Bank just announced its new Plaza Players Series, and some familiar faces will be there to kick things off.

Tony-nominated writer and composer Joe Iconis will be joined by wife Lauren Marcus back at the birthplace of his “Be More Chill” and “Love in Hate Nation,”  joined by special guests at 7 p.m. on June 25 to 27 and July 1 to 4.

“Two River’s loyal and eager audiences have stood by us for the past year, showing their socially distanced support for our family of artists. Now those artists are busting out on our Plaza for nights filled with music, laughter and unmasked love,” said Two River Artistic Director John Dias in a news release.

Plaza Players Series show begin at 7 p.m. at the theater’s outdoor plaza. Shows are expected to run 75 minutes, and tables of two and four are available for purchase at $50 and $100 respectively. Specially curated snacks and light fare will be available for purchase through a partnership with Sickles Market.

Here’s the full Plaza Players Series lineup:

  • Joe Iconis + Lauren Marcus, with other special guests, June 25 to 27 and July 1 to 4
  • “Real People Things” by Janey Miles Feingold and Bela Konstancja Kawalec, a concert presentation of a new musical, July 15 to 18
  • ToyBox Live with Rinde Eckert, who brings his eclectic collection of instruments, songs, readings and more, July 22 to 25
  • Sinuhé Padilla-Isunza and Alea, Colombian artist Alea traces Latin American musical heritage alongside Padilla-Isunza, July 29 to Aug. 1 and Aug. 5 to 8
  • “Upstream” by Chesney Snow (“OO-BLA-DEE”) and Faye Chiao, fusion of beatboxing, piano, spoken word and vocals, Aug. 12 to 15 and 19 to 22.

Two River ends its summer season with comedian Hasan Minhaj, who will showcase material from his new one-man show at the end of August inside the Rechnitz Theater.

Tickets for Minhaj’s show, 8 p.m. Aug. 26, 6:30 and 9 p.m. Aug. 27 and 28, and 3 p.m. Aug. 29, are $25 to $54.50.
